Start wide

Look at the overall direction first. Then check which industries are moving with it—and which aren’t.

Check the breadth

A move shared by many stocks tells a different story from a move driven by a few large companies.

Follow what interests you

Take a sector into the screener, or look for upcoming earnings that could change the picture.

Two things worth knowing.

What does “market breadth” mean?

It’s a way of looking at how widely a market move is shared. An index can rise because a few large companies are doing well—even while many smaller stocks fall.

Does a green sector mean I should buy it?

No. It shows movement over a particular period, not whether a company is a good investment for you. Look at the business, valuation, and risks before making a decision.
